What people said about volunteering for Manchester Youth Zone.

Deloitte team volunteering
It’s a great feeling to give back

We have thoroughly enjoyed working with Manchester Youth Zone over the course of our three year partnership, as part of our 5 million Futures social impact strategy. Our partnership facilitated a broad range of rewarding volunteering opportunities of scale for many of our Deloitte colleagues to get involved with. These opportunities do not only make a positive impact in our community but allow our colleagues to bond through a shared sense of purpose. We encourage our people to take up the offer of using 3.5 hours to volunteer each month through our 5 Million Futures programme.

Everyone one is very welcoming

I enjoy volunteering at the Youth Zone because everyone has been so welcoming, and the energy with both the team and the young people is always positive. I like helping out wherever I can during sessions, and I do it simply because I enjoy being part of the atmosphere and supporting others.

I didn’t see a single mobile phone in the hands of the young people

It was amazing to see the heroic work of John and the team at MYZ during our rider induction volunteer session. Throughout the visit, I didn’t see a single mobile phone in the hands of the young people, instead, there was laughter, teamwork, and real human connection. Manchester Youth Zone provides such a safe and welcoming space for young people to grow, and it’s a privilege for the British Cycling Foundation to play a small part in supporting that mission.

Volunteer FAQs

Read through some of the common questions that people ask before becoming a volunteer.

I'm pregnant - can I still volunteer?

When we know that a volunteer is pregnant, we carry out a risk assessment for the role to ensure it is safe. If any risks are identified, we will look at reasonable adjustments or suggest an alternative role that is more suitable.

My child attends MYZ - can I still volunteer?

In many cases you can still volunteer, but situations are assessed individually. Please contact our Volunteer Co‑ordinator to discuss your circumstances so we can consider the best and safest way for you to get involved.

I need to volunteer as part of my education - can I do this at Manchester Youth Zone?

We do host placement students, but these are arranged through local universities and spaces are limited. If you are interested, please speak to your placement tutor or get in touch with our Youth Voice & Volunteer Co‑ordinator for more details.

I have a disability; can I still volunteer?

Yes, absolutely. Many of our members have disabilities or additional needs and representation among our volunteers is very important to us. Please let us know about any access needs or adjustments you require so we can support you effectively in your role.

Do you offer corporate volunteering opportunities?

Yes. We have opportunities specifically for businesses and corporate groups. You can find out more on our Supporters page or by contacting our Fundraising Manager, who can share our latest corporate volunteering information and opportunities.

I've recently been a member of the Youth Zone - can I still volunteer?

If you are aged 14–19, you may be able to join our Young Leaders programme to gain experience. If you are over 18, you can apply for our standard volunteer roles at the Youth Zone.

Do I get my expenses paid?

Yes, we reimburse reasonable expenses incurred while volunteering with us. You’ll need to submit a claim with valid receipts and follow our expenses policy, which we’ll explain fully during your induction.

I've got a criminal record - can I still volunteer?

All volunteer positions require an enhanced DBS check. Having a criminal record does not automatically prevent you from volunteering; decisions are made based on the nature of the offence and how relevant it is to the role. If you have unspent convictions, you will be asked to provide details confidentially for review.

Can I volunteer from home?

Most of our volunteer opportunities take place in the Youth Zone itself. However, there are some roles that involve less frequent visits and certain administrative tasks that can be done remotely. Each role description explains where the work is based.

What if I'm not enjoying my role?

You are free to step back from your volunteer role at any time. If you decide to leave, we simply ask that you give us as much notice as possible so we can minimise disruption to services for young people.

What can I expect when I volunteer?

You will have a clearly defined volunteer role, a named person for support, and a main contact for your sessions. We provide training, ongoing guidance, and regular feedback so you can build your skills. We also value your ideas and experience and will look for ways to involve you and recognise your contribution.

Will I be interviewed?

For most roles you will be invited in for an informal interview of around 45 minutes. This is normally led by the Volunteer Manager along with a member of staff connected to the role, such as a Youth Worker from the relevant area.

I'm receiving benefits - will volunteering affect these?

Volunteering usually does not affect benefit payments, but it’s important to double‑check. The NCVO website has up‑to‑date guidance on how volunteering and benefits work together, which we encourage you to read.

How do I become a Volunteer?

Visit our Volunteer Vacancies page to explore the roles available. When you find one that suits you, you can start your application online. If you have a particular talent or expertise you’d like to share, take a look at our Specialist Skill Volunteer role too.

How much time do I need to commit?

There is no formal contracted time commitment for volunteers. Each role will include a suggested time commitment to help you understand what’s expected, but there is flexibility. If you’re unsure you can meet the full suggestion, we can discuss options with you.

I'm not a British national - can I still volunteer?

In most cases, being a non‑UK national won’t prevent you from volunteering. However, you should check the conditions of your visa and be prepared to show that you are allowed to volunteer as part of the recruitment process.

How old do I need to be to volunteer with the Youth Zone?

Most volunteer roles are open to people aged 18 or over. If you are a member of the Youth Zone and aged 14–19 (or up to 25 with additional needs), you may be able to get involved through our Young Leaders programme instead.

Do I need any specific skills to volunteer?

For most roles we simply ask that you care about supporting young people—no previous experience is required. Some positions do ask for certain skills or qualifications, and these will always be clearly listed in the role description.

If I don't have any experience working or volunteering with young people, can I still apply?

Yes, you can. Experience working with young people is helpful but not essential. Everyone has to start somewhere, and we’re happy to support you in your first volunteering role alongside young people.
