Manchester Youth Zone has officially launched its new inclusive gym spaces, welcoming former World Championship medallist and Olympic coach Jenny Meadows to cut the ribbon and celebrate a major investment in young people's health and wellbeing in North Manchester.

The Wigan-based athlete is a World Championship medallist, Olympic coach (including for Olympic Champion, Keeley Hodgkinson), and founder of M11 Track. Meadows was joined by fellow coach Trevor Painter and athletes from M11 Track. Young people played a central role throughout the event, leading visitors through a series of gym challenges and sharing first-hand how the new facilities will support their health, confidence and aspirations.

Located in Harpurhey, Manchester Youth Zone works with thousands of young people every year, providing safe spaces, positive activities and opportunities to thrive. The expanded gym offer has been designed in collaboration with the Youth Zone’s members and aims to remove barriers to participation in physical activity, particularly for girls and young women.

The newly enhanced gym spaces provide a bright, modern and welcoming environment where young people can build confidence and improve their health. Alongside a fully equipped main gym featuring cardio, resistance and strength-training equipment, Manchester Youth Zone has introduced a dedicated girls-only gym. Developed in response to the needs and feedback of local young people, the facilities have been designed to ensure that everyone can access fitness in a way that feels inclusive and supportive and to encourage girls and young women to explore a range of activities in an environment where they feel comfortable. Large open-plan areas, natural light and dedicated wellbeing spaces create an environment where young people can try new activities, build healthy habits and develop confidence for life.

The enhanced gym offering has been made possible thanks to the support of Manchester Youth Zone donors, Together Money as well property developers Rennaker. Manchester Youth Zone has worked in partnership with a range of stakeholders including Manchester City Council whose support has been instrumental in delivering a programme of ongoing activities for young people allowing members opportunities across many spheres including physical activity.
