Junior Choices is a 10 week preventative programme that uses sports, arts & adventurous activities to instil confidence, self-worth, leadership skills and positive role models in the lives of young people.
We work with vulnerable young people in School Years 5-7 who may be at risk from anti-social behaviour or easily misled. They may not be engaged in all of the curriculum offer and are at risk of becoming less engaged.
We help develop positive friendships and improve existing relationships with peers and adults. This will increase confidence and self-esteem, as well as develop new skills in sports & adventurous activities. Increased involvement in positive activities helps make young people feel empowered.
We aim to work with young people with an interest in sports and gaining new skills. This will consist of existing and new members of Manchester Youth Zone from the greater community and surrounding schools.
There are no skill levels required – just an interest to participate!
Junior Choices Activities
This will consist of one-to-one and small group sports sessions with project staff. The emphasis will be to build key relationships and set goals for the project and the young people involved.
A cohort of 10 young people will come together to participate in team building activities, sports and adventurous activities. We will offer ongoing one-to-one support through this stage to review long term goals and provide positive feedback on progress so far.
Young people will get involved with familiar team games like football and basketball. They will also take part in more challenging activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, water sports, and much more!
A week of celebration events and signposting onto other suitable programmes and agencies. This will lead to the young people being fully integrated into Manchester Youth Zone provisions and activities.
There may also be opportunities for young people to go on a 5 day Residential with Outward Bound in Wales or the Lake District. This helps young people develop their confidence and interpersonal skills in a brand new environment and pushes them out of their comfort zone.
